After all the furore over the cat in ‘Abu Dhabi’, customs regulations meant that the Cabin Crew had to take the crazed psycho-cat back to England with them. Arthur begged Carolyn to let them keep it, but she refused, as Snoopadoop was already more than enough trouble. Arthur and Martin finally came to an agreement whereby it lives with Martin but Arthur pays for its food out of his pocket money and technically ‘owns’ it (he counts it as one of his proudest possessions, alongside the starboard wing of Gerti). Martin, originally suspicious of the vicious cat, has now come to be quite fond of it, and allows it to sleep on his bed when it’s too cold to be put outside. He calls it Molly.
Carolyn and her other ex-husband divorced amicably and are still friends. They talk a few times a month and have a standing not-date every year on the anniversary of their divorce being finalized.
Due to spending many hours on flight simulators throughout the course of his life, Martin developed a talent with video games. He could easily take a pro gamer, but never has a chance to show off this skill.
Douglas was an actor before he was a pilot and continues to act on the side when he is not flying planes. ‘Roger Allam’ is his stage name.
Douglas secretly adores it when Martin stutters and blushes. He makes snarky and sometimes mean comments just to get the reaction from Martin. It makes him want to snog the captain, but of course he won’t ever admit that.
Douglas’ daughters’ names are Mary and Shelley. He misses them incredibly but due to his rather horrible flying schedule and his first wife’s over-protectiveness, he hardly ever sees them.
Herc was teased mercilessly about his name when he was a kid. He seriously considered changing it, but never followed through.
After seeing Back to the Future, Martin spent several months trying to convince people to call him Marty. No one did.
Carolyn’s name is actually Carol. She thinks Carolyn sounds more sophisticated.
Douglas has never liked to be called Doug. Even when he was a teenager, he insisted on Douglas.
Arthur is actually his middle name.
Douglas was forced to resign from British Air because he used to be a high functioning alcoholic. Once, his drinking got out of hand, and he starting flying drunk — he started behaving unprofessionally and ruined his second marriage.
A very lenient/sympathetic boss gave him the choice of leaving quietly or being fired. However, people talk in a small industry and his reputation was ruined.
Around this time, MJN was about to fold because Carolyn’s pilot and co-pilot suddenly left and she had a job she needed to complete. Getting Martin was simple, but Douglas was a risk. Luckily, he and Carolyn had a previous relationship, so she was willing to give him a chance if he swore to go to AA meetings and never drink again.
Douglas agreed to the terms as long as Carolyn didn’t tell anyone else about his recovering alcoholism.
Martin’s pretty much straight, but he’s also super-duper doublerainbow megagay for Herc. This bothers Douglas a great deal. Not because he wants Martin — he doesn’t — but because if Martin’s going to be hopelessly super-duper doublerainbow mega gay for someone, it should be Douglas. Not Herc. (anon)
